Tesco Wick

Tesco Wick was one of the UK’s first timber framed superstores and the eco-store to be built entirely from recyclable materials. With an opening date just 12 weeks from the time of brief, Tesco Wick proved to be an iconic and groundbreaking project.

Tesco Wick

Innovation is truly the buzzword for Wick, as it houses all the latest environmental technology. Features include energy saving lighting, skylights and lower roofs as well as renewable energy sources in the form of rainwater harvesting, wind turbines and solar power.

Insider know-how

Working to an extremely tough build schedule, our goal was to focus on eco-friendly initiatives while developing an easy to use measurement system to guide procurement. This would then be embedded in Tesco’s culture – giving  them what they needed to make changes across their estate. Our industry knowledge delivered real cost-benefits, as we used our procurement expertise to connect suppliers and buyers and provide hands-on support to keep the project running to time and budget.

We placed our own design managers inside the Tesco team to carry out a two week audit of the store equipment. During this time, we identified over 100 initiatives that would transform a standard Tesco interior fit-out into a greener format. We then developed a methodology for environmental improvement.

Taking valuable learnings, not just from the initiatives, but also from how we worked together with the team, we developed a methodology for environmental improvement and applied it to the Shrewsbury process. The results spoke for themselves – with greater engagement and more eco initiatives incorporated into the way procurement went about its ‘business as usual’ operations.

Getting results

Within a 14-week time frame, the supply chain and internal Tesco teams were on board, allowing us to coordinate the successful delivery of over 50 environmental initiatives into the store, without compromising the overall building activity and store handover to Tesco staff from the build team.

We’re proud to say that we helped put the ‘eco’ into ‘every little helps’ and take the first big greener steps for the interior of the stores. Wick was nominated for Supermarket of the Year at Retail Week Awards 2007. And because everyone understood the eco agenda, we were able to double the initiatives at the second eco-store, which opened in Shrewsbury the following year.
