Tesco decided to grasp the nettle with a new store build in Wick and this is where Integrity came in. As strategic consultants, we worked alongside Tesco’s Property Team to help enhance all aspects of store design and interior fit-out.
Green ideas
To help Tesco define ‘green design’ we developed over 100 initiatives. Ease of use and application were key, because Tesco had an issue with existing material being too complex and often conflicting. We put in place a rating system for sustainability, recycleability, pollutant production and energy input to enable assessment of the ‘eco-impact’ of each store.
The initiatives we developed encompassed everything from eliminating the use of arsenic-producing chrome to refurbishing existing trolleys and replacing steel signposts with recycled alternatives. By selecting a different shape for the café hotplate we saved 25% energy – it was often that simple.
Future-proofed
Integrity’s specialist skills helped Tesco rethink their processes for a more eco-friendly future. The initiatives weren’t designed solely for Wick’s ‘special’ wooden framed build but were developed to be used in the more ‘usual’ store builds and in the everyday running of the business. Once the test sites were completed, we helped them develop a £500 million, 10 year programme to build greener outlets across their entire portfolio of UK stores.
